Heading to the Sea
Bronze – 3”x14”x9”
We live in the middle of the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, and Green, Loggerhead, and Leatherback turtles nest on the beach from April to September. The hatchlings have only a short time to make it safely to the sea, and are so quick to disappear when they reach the water. The patterns of the sea and sand are constantly changing, and the zone where the two meet is magical.
After the loggerhead hatchlings reach the sea, their chances of survival increase greatly. As the waves carry them, they move with grace and speed through the water, quite a contrast to their awkward crawl from the nest across the sand to the water's edge.

Artist Statement / 2017
The ocean has always been the center of my life in Florida. I live on an island, with the Atlantic Ocean in front of me, the Indian River lagoon in my back yard, and the Archie Carr Turtle Refuge on either side. The ocean sounds, tropical colors, brilliant light and open spaces are all inspiration for my work. As captain of my 36-ft Cheoy Lee sloop and a licensed Coast Guard captain delivering boats, I was able to spend time on the water and to experience new places. Always there was sea life; native dolphin and tarpon, wintering right whales and all sorts of marvels. Diving allowed access to an underwater world, leading to ideas for many works of art.
